The four main luminaries of my prentice years were Bartók, Hindemith, Schönberg and Stravinsky. Since then their reputations have varied as capriciously as the temperature of an English summer. I can safely say that none has become my favourite bedtime listening, but it was a real pleasure to attend the unveiling on a traffic island outside South Kensington underground station of a statue to this dapper Hungarian in commemoration of his stay in the borough. Next time I passed, the statue had disappeared; but it's back now, even if on a slightly diminished island...
