'Imo' in person was always heroic, magnificent, and slightly absurd, as can readily be seen from the photo on the front of this CD. Inevitably she matured in the shadow of her father, and she later submerged her own gifts by becoming amanuensis to Benjamin Britten for a good dozen years. Her sterling work at Aldeburgh can be sampled here in the orchestration she made of the Festival Cantata Britten wrote for a Northampton church with only organ accompaniment. She was determined to rejoice in style with orchestra reinforced by clicking castanets and flamboyant tambourine...
