At quartet sessions, my colleagues would always opt for the highways of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, whereas I yearned additionally for such byways as contained in early string fantasies, works by Schumann, Borodin and Dvořák, and if my luck held, Hindemith, Bloch or Bartók. So it has been nothing but refreshment to launch the New Year with much unfamiliar piano music by Beethoven, Brahms, Dvořák and now Tchaikovsky. The last cannot be said to have produced much in the way of keyboard masterpieces, but he is certainly worth exploring.
While in his last year at the St Petersburg Conservatoire, Tchaikovsky wrote a piano sonata in C sharp minor...
