The Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra,
heard by MIKE WHEELER

 

With Dvořák's Eighth Symphony's sunny reputation, it's easy to forget just how complex its range of emotional shadings can be. The Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra and its Colombia-born Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada, made sure that the darker, more introspective moments were given full value, without swamping the rest (Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, UK, 7 March 2014). So the first movement recapitulation was powerful and stormy, and the work took an almost tragic turn in the second movement's latter half...
