A 3D Fairytale

Mozart's 'The Magic Flute' from Bologna
impresses GIUSEPPE PENNISI

 

A few years ago, I reported on a London Royal Opera House and Rome Teatro dell'Opera production of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (Fairytale Atmosphere, 13 April 2012). That production, signed by the well-known British stage director David McVicar who is generally considered to be quite traditional, was very successful because the plot had been cleared of most of the philosophical and masonic elements, and the dramaturgy focused on the coming to adulthood of a young couple.

Die Zauberflöte has a similar treatment in the Bologna Opera House staging which was premiered on 16 May and which I saw and heard on 17 May 2015. There is, however, an important difference...
