Strongly uplifting in their upbeat childlike simplicity, these infectious dance-like Czech and Moravian Christmas carols for children's choir and traditional instruments could provide a powerful antidote to the ills of our modern society. Although almost all completely unfamiliar to me, the style is quite similar to the live folk music I heard in the 1990s at a festival in the Zlín region of Moravia.
But according to the CD liner notes, they're not actually folk music, but original compositions by Jan Jirásek, who was born in Rychnov nad Kněžnou in 1955 and studied at the Janáček Academy in Brno. He has worked as a music editor and producer for Czech Radio and has been awarded the Czech Lion Award for his film music...
