Charles O'Brien: Complete Piano Music, Volume Two. © 2015 Toccata Classics

This is the second of two discs the Toccata label, forever in search of restoring lost and deserving reputations, has devoted to Charles O'Brien (1882-1968), a composer who survived into our own age yet was an almost exact contemporary of that great era of composersStravinsky, Webern, Szymanowski, Casella — who followed on from Impressionism to launch the modern era.

Despite his Irish-sounding name, O'Brien was English born (in Eastbourne, of a musical family), though he did, after Oxford, take his D Mus from Trinity College, Dublin. He later taught at what was the embryonic Royal Scottish Academy, and was conductor of several choirs in Edinburgh.

These are first recordings, and all the more welcome for that...
