Revival or World Premiere?

'I Puritani' in Palermo,
heard by GIUSEPPE PENNISI

Recently in the New York Times it was stated that Palermo's Teatro Massimo, with its many initiatives (including free open air performances of simplified operas in squares of the city's areas most affected by drug trafficking and prostitution) is a pillar against the mafia because it is attracting people away from crime. It is also one of the major and most innovative Italian musical theatres with an opera and ballet season as well as a concert season with internationally known conductors.

On 13 April 2018 I was at the opening night of a sold-out house for a revival of Vincenzo Bellini's I Puritani. The original production had been premiered in 2008 and has been seen and heard also in Bologna, Cagliari and Trieste, as well as at the Savonlinna Festival in Finland and at the Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo...
