British musicologist John Tyrrell was born in what is now Harare in Zimbabwe on 17 August 1942, and studied in Cape Town, Oxford and Brno. He lectured at Nottingham University from 1976, becoming a professor in 1996. From 2000 until 2008 he undertook research at Cardiff University.
Tyrrell was an expert on Janáček, publishing several books including a two-volume biography, and was executive editor of the 2001 second edition of New Grove.
John Tyrrell died on 4 October 2018, aged seventy-six.
