Brilliant Throughout

The All-Russian programme [Royal Festival Hall, London UK, 23 October 2011] was bound to bring in a capacity audience -- and so it proved. The programme started with Shostakovich's Festive Overture. For all the conductor's immediate Russian contemporaries, past and present, this sizzled with colourful panache. The late Rudolf Kempe described this wonderful orchestra as having a superb weight of tone in the bass registers...
