The two quartets comprising this release are unconventionally scored for clarinet, violin, cello and piano.

Their composers are better known on the American scene than elsewhere -- Peter Lieberson was born in New York City and Roger Reynolds in Detroit.

Lieberson's second wife, the superlative mezzo soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson died of breast cancer (2006) and Peter died of cancer in Tel Aviv (2011).

The Tashi Quartet (originally known as TASHI), comprising violinist Ida Kavafian, pianist Peter Serkin, cellist Fred Sherry and clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, was founded in 1973 with the purpose of playing Olivier Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time as well as commissioning new works...
