Crunchy Bitonality

Music by Julian Dawes,
enjoyed by MALCOLM MILLER

A cappella choral settings of Psalms and liturgical texts by the composer Julian Dawes highlighted his special affinity for the choral medium, with engaging melodic contours, rich polytonal harmonies and vivid dramatization. The settings formed inspiring centrepieces of a programme of Julian Dawes' works for voices, piano and strings given before a large, enthusiastic audience at The Forge Venue, Camden Town, London UK, on 27 November 2012. Dawes' considerable output includes a range of dramatic music deriving from his experience as musical director of theatre companies, as well as several large scale choral works including the cantatas The Death of Moses and Ruth, and several song cycles. This concert, introduced by the composer, offered a refreshing insight into Dawes' more recent works, exploring his expansive and varied harmonic and rhythmic language in outstanding performances...
