Derby Bach Choir's 'St John Passion'
impresses MIKE WHEELER

 

Derby Bach Choir has sung J S Bach's St John Passion many times over the years, but their latest performance had no feeling of routine or over-familiarity (Derby Cathedral, Derby, UK, 23 March 2013).

The impact of the opening chorus was maintained throughout the evening. Conductor Richard Roddis encouraged a combination of punchy delivery with clarity and buoyancy in the crowd scenes; a briskly-paced account of 'Let us not divide it', as the soldiers draw lots for Jesus' coat, was particularly nimble...
