Vivid and Colourful

Two choirs join forces to
celebrate the Britten anniversary,
heard by MIKE WHEELER

 

Derby's Derwent Singers and Nottingham's Sinfonia Chorale, with their shared conductor Richard Roddis, brought their Britten centenary programme to Derby Cathedral (Derby, UK, 9 November 2013 ) after performing it in Nottingham the week before.

They prefaced Britten with two Swiss composers, starting at the Cathedral's east end with Carl Rütti's O Magnum Mysterium, allowing the piece to build up build-up waves of sound without any unnecessary intervention.

Moving forward for the rest of the programme they gave an alert performance of Frank Martin's Mass for Double Choir, responsive to the music's every nuance and change of direction, not least the sudden lightening of tone at the end of the Kyrie...
