Tien Hsieh plays
Bach and Beethoven -
'... a distinctive robust architecture ...'
Tien Hsieh performs two Bach/Busoni items, one Bach/Siloti transcription: the Adagio from Sonata No 5 in F minor, BWV 1018, and a Bach/Liszt work: the Prelude and Fugue BWV 543. She plays Liszt's adaptation of the Beethoven liederkreis An die ferne Geliebte (1816, transcribed 1849) and finally the bona fide Beethoven Sonata No 32, Op 111 (1821/22).
The two Ferruccio Busoni transcriptions are the Prelude and fugue in D major, BWV 532 and the chorale prelude I cry to thee, Lord Jesus Christ, BWV 639/177 (1982). In these Bach/Busoni transcriptions, Hsieh has neither the mercurial precision of Glenn Gould (1932-1982), nor the expressive poise of Rosalyn Tureck (1913-2003)...
