Bellini's 'I Puritani',
enjoyed by GIUSEPPE PENNISI

 

I Puritani is Vincenzo Bellini's last opera. It was written for the Parisian audience and premiered just a few months before the composer died at the age of thirty five. It is seldom performed, not only because the libretto is quite confused but also since it requires very impervious vocal roles. In 1835, Bellini had a rather unique set of singers for the four main roles; it is nearly impossible to replicate the register of the tenor Giovanni Battista Rubini and the coloratura of the soprano Giulia Grisi...
