This generous collection, comprising mostly less-familiar Bizet, benefits from the attentive conducting of Jean-Luc Tingaud, who takes particular care to use dynamics expressively in the cantabile phrases, and never lets the tuttis settle into routine.

Such treatment makes the symphony-suite Roma come off far better than usual. The slow introduction is dignified, with a flowing breadth. As the music moves into the Allegro agitato, the scansion's not immediately clear, but Tingaud projects the lighter textures with dexterity, and the second theme is spacious and lyrical...
