Alberto Portugheis

Pianist and teacher Alberto Portugheis was born in La Plata, Argentina, to Romanian and Russian parents. He won first prize at Geneva's Concours de Virtuosité and is widely-travelled, giving masterclasses, solo piano recitals, concerts with orchestra and playing chamber music in many countries. His recordings, drawn from a particularly wide repertoire, include a CD dedicated to the piano music of Gioachino Rossini and a disc of Rachmaninov and Shostakovich sonatas with cellist Gwyneth George. He is vice-chairman of the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe, the International Society for the Study of Tension in Performance and the European Piano Teachers' Association, and was the founder of the Asociacion Latino-Americana de Pianistas Pedagosgos. In addition to his work in music, Portugheis is also a campaigner for world peace and demilitarisation.
