MAJESTY, MOMENT AND CONTROL

Ben Bloor's concluding recital for
Derby Cathedral's summer organ series
impresses TONY WESTERMAN

The Organ Scholar of Derby Cathedral, Ben Bloor, gave the final recital in the 2010 series [25 August 2010, Derby Cathedral, UK]. It was clear from the opening piece, Cortège et litanie (Marcel Dupré), that Mr Bloor views the organ as an expressive instrument and, having discovered his Muse, has absorbed the precepts of his mentor and teacher, Peter Gould, and the organist with whom he has shared so much of the accompanying of the cathedral choir, both in this country and abroad, Dr Tom Corfield.

Mr Bloor very quickly established a rapport with the audience (the largest of the season) who warmed to his intelligent interpretation of the pieces, his dry humour and the future they recognised in a young musician who, in September, is to take up the post of Organ Scholar at St George's, Windsor, and in September 2011, Organ Scholar at New College, Oxford...
