We do not know exactly when the historical Simone Boccanegra was born, but it was probably in the early thirteen hundreds. We do know that he became the Doge of Genoa in 1339. He resigned that office a few months later but regained power in 1356. From then on he held Genoa's highest office until his death by poison in 1363...
