A Joan Sutherland portrait -
heard by
GERALD FENECH

'... a fitting tribute to the singing legend from Australia ...'

Joan Sutherland: A Portrait. © 2012 Regis Records

One of the greatest sopranos of the twentieth century, Joan Sutherland launched her career as a dramatic mezzo. At first she was hoping to become a great Wagnerian like her hero Kirsten Flagstad, but her husband to be, Richard Bonynge, realized her potential in other areas, and helped her to explore the upper register, which came with the utmost ease and fluency. By this time Sutherland was already a professional singer with a contract at Covent Garden, but it was only after she sang Lucia di Lammermoor at the same theatre in 1959 that her career changed completely. Critics and audiences alike were bowled over by her mesmerizing performance and the young soprano became a celebrity overnight...
