One of the greatest sopranos of the twentieth century, Joan Sutherland launched her career as a dramatic mezzo. At first she was hoping to become a great Wagnerian like her hero Kirsten Flagstad, but her husband to be, Richard Bonynge, realized her potential in other areas, and helped her to explore the upper register, which came with the utmost ease and fluency.
