If one is under the impression that Victorian operatic fare was the prerogative of just Gilbert and Sullivan then one is sadly mistaken. Many British and Irish composers mastered this genre of entertainment, and several had successful theatre careers. One such name is Michael William Balfe (1808-1870). Born in Dublin, Balfe learnt to play the violin and piano before moving to London to continue his studies...
